Fire Safety

The fire alarm system consists of a two-stage alarm with voice communication. Upon activation, the alarm sends a signal directly to our security office. The fire department is then immediately called. Also, an emergency team consisting of members of the HDL security and engineering departments are dispatched to begin investigating and assessing the emergency.

Upon activation, the alarm will normally put out a slow ring for approximately five minutes. Should the emergency worsen, a second bell will occur. The second stage will be a continuous ring. ALL TENANTS ARE TO EVACUATE WHEN THIS BELL RINGS. Halifax Developments Limited will keep building occupants apprised by the voice communication system.

When an alarm sounds, an emergency recall system is activated whereby the elevators automatically return to the Ground Level of the Tower. If the elevator is occupied when the emergency recall system starts, the elevator will return to the Barrington Street level where passengers can exit the elevator and the building.

Should a fire occur in the CIBC Building, Tenants should pull the nearest fire alarm. Pull stations are located on each floor by each stairwell. When possible, tenants should notify the Customer Service Centre (423-9138) about the fire and its exact location after an evacuation has occurred. Tenants’ first priority should be the safety of all employees and visitors. Tenants should not attempt to fight the fire. Only trained personnel know best how to use the equipment.

CIBC Building also houses a standpipe system: a pipe that runs from bottom to the top of the building and contains pressurized water. In the event of a fire, fire fighters attach their hoses to the pipe for their water supply. Water hoses and water-type extinguishers are found in glass compartments in the corridor on each floor. Due to extreme pressure, only trained personnel should use hoses. Further protection is available via smoke and heat detectors.

Halifax Developments provides and maintains fire extinguishers as part of our base building standards. Additional extinguishers are the responsibility of the tenant.
