Scotia Square: Fire Warden Manual

Every day of our lives we are exposed to countless hazards.

One of the most devastating accidents to occur is fire.

In Scotia Square, there are two aspects to fire protection. First, there are the pro-active devices and systems that are integrated into the building. Second, there is the human protection system - The Fire Warden Program.

This manual has been developed to familiarize the Fire Wardens with the building fire protective devices and systems and with the duties and responsibilities of Wardens, including specifically, fire evacuation procedures.

The Fire Warden Program is organized to ensure the safety of all occupants within Scotia Square and it should be treated with the same seriousness and concern afforded your everyday work.

RETAIL FIRE AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Scotia Square has a two-stage fire alarm system. The first stage alerts Halifax Developments Limited and building occupants that an alarm situation exists. Halifax Developments Limited Emergency Response Team will immediately report to the site of the alarm and evaluate the situation and act accordingly. During the first stage the bells will sound in the mall at a slow rate (once every three seconds). Occupants are not required to evacuate the mall at this time. Also, during the first stage, the HDL Emergency Response Team will be keeping tenants and other occupants apprised via the voice communication system.

If the second stage sounds you will hear the bells at a fast rate (twice per second). This is a full evacuation alarm and all customers and staff must evacuate the building immediately. A staff member should be designated to inspect the store (i.e. change rooms, storage rooms, etc.) before departing and securing the store.
